Why ten-frames work
A ten-frame is a 2 × 5 grid that shows numbers as groups of five and ten, so children can see 7 as “5 and 2 more” or “3 away from 10” at a glance instead of counting one by one. That is exactly the thinking behind the make ten strategy, which helps with every addition and subtraction fact to 20.
Quick games: flash a card and ask “How many? How many more to make 10?”; roll a die and fill the frame; or race to fill two frames. More ideas in our math games for kindergarten and the guide to teaching addition.
